May T be perraitted to express my own
and the Squadron's sincere sympathy with you in the sad news
concerning your son, Flight Sergeant William Henry Holbrook.
The aircraft of which he was the Mid-önper
Gunner took off to attack Freiburg on the night of"the 27th.
November, I9I4J4-, and nothing further has been heard.
You may be aware that in quite a large
percentage of cases aircrew reported missing are eventrually
reported pr isoner of war and T hope that this may give you
some comfort in your anxlety.
Your son was a most proficient member of
a good crew and his loas is deeply regretted.
It is desired to explain that the request
in the telpram notifying you of the casualty to your son was
included with the object of avoiding his Chance of escane
being prejudiced by undue Publicity in case he was still at
large. This is not to say that any further Information about
him is available, but is a precaution adopted in the case of
all personnel reported missing.
His effects have been collected and wilj
be forwarded to you in due course through Air Ministry Channels.
In the meantime you may rest assured that
should any further news of your son be received you will be
notified immediately.
